Correcting gum recession is vital if you are to have a healthy mouth. Gum recession leaves the roots of your teeth exposed, which causes them to become sensitive and leaves them vulnerable to damage and decay. Receding gums can also make you look older and impair the aesthetics of your smile.
Conventional gum recession treatment requires surgical incisions to remove a piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth and graft it onto the area in need of treatment. This is followed by sutures and a long healing process. This type of grafting is still necessary for some patients with gum recession, and Dr. Chantry uses gentle techniques to provide precision gum grafting for those who need it.
However, many of our patients are now able to take advantage of a breakthrough, minimally invasive gum recession treatment known as the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. With the pinhole technique, gum recession can be effectively corrected without the cutting, suturing and extensive healing that are part of traditional gum grafting. Dr. Chantry is one of the few dental practitioners in the United States currently trained and certified to deliver this procedure.
Fast and comfortable treatment

The entire treatment procedure will be explained to you in detail ahead of time.
With the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, Dr. Chantry can treat up to 14 teeth at a time. Only a local anesthetic is required, and the entire procedure can be completed in about two hours. Since no incisions, gum grafts or sutures are used, there is little to no discomfort and healing is very rapid. In fact, most patients are able to resume their normal activities the next day.
The Pinhole Surgical Technique was developed in 2006 by Dr. John Chao to provide his patients with an effective gum recession treatment that was gentle on the tissues and fast-healing. The procedure has been tested extensively since its introduction and has been shown to yield uniformly stable and long-lasting results.

How the Pinhole Surgical Technique Works
Before starting the procedure, Dr. Chantry cleans and prepares the affected teeth and numbs the gums with a local anesthetic. He then makes pinhole-sized entry points in the gum tissue above the affected teeth. He places a small, specialized dental instrument through each pinhole and gently frees up the outer layer of gum tissue so it can be repositioned.
Dr. Chantry then guides the outer layer of gum tissue over the roots and restores a healthy, natural-looking gumline. Collagen strips are then inserted to stabilize the gums in their new position and to promote healing. Since only tiny pinholes were made in the gums, no sutures are needed. Due to the nature of gum tissue, healing is rapid—the gums usually completely heal within 24 hours.
